As always it’s about friendship, critical thinking, personal backgrounds and releasing anger… No further explanation is really needed, just take a listen to the songs we sing and read through the lines we wrote.

Some thoughts on the context of “A Occasional Refusal Of Man” Refusal/Denial of mankind or better: misanthropy, in fact, is a very strong word to use and even a harsh view on life and people in general. …. Referring to the dictionary, misanthropy describes the mindset of a person who despises or hates the whole human race or mankind itself… .. A feeling which some of you possibly might relate to… .. Hatred or refusal definitely are current terms used in our everyday surrounding.
By “everyday surrounding” I mean the so-called “scene”. Look at the covers, the lyrics, the people in the scene and so on. The reason to this is obvious: If you deal or are engaged with grievances within your own life-world (and not causing them yourself…that happens more often than you think) you might be apt to evolve hatred or denial… The fact being open-minded or interested enough not only to scratch the surface thematically brings about the fact that you might evolve even more despicable structures…
Alternative media such as AK Press, some fanzines (MRR, Profane Existence, Slug & Lettuce etc) or critical websites as well as press-agencies deliver the necessary background and the needed information… Never the less (and besides all the undeniable facts) I think that hatred isn’t the only emotion we (on one hand) are forced to handle with but (on the other hand) have the commitment to deal with… Rather than that it’s the constant change between hatred, understanding, affection and accommodation which dominates our everyday life and sometimes leaves us behind with a bad aftertaste…
Personally I often struggle with the fact that my reaction towards society (better: the people in it) becomes more and more dismissive… Some might misunderstand my behaviour and reaction as arrogant, non-reflective or unfair. But to be honest: I’m not in a comparable mental state than SOME people so I don’t care that much… Don’t get me wrong: I’m absolutely able to put a good face on things, act PC, be functional or whatever. Never the less (or maybe intimately because of that) I feel sick, angry and dismissive about the people in my everyday surrounding most of the time… .. I’m sick of them all: those arrogant fuckfaces who, standing above everybody else in their opinion, walk this earth. Those who, driven by egoism, reach even higher levels of inhumanity. Those who establish their own supremacy on the shoulders of the weak by means of lies and corruption. I abhor those traitors who kick down in the faces of others not knowing what it even means to be down on the floor or be on the other side of something they call “the truth”. Those who always say “yes” to all and everything not being able to stand up for someone or even themselves. Last but not least a big “FUCK YOU” to all those (and let me say I really hate those fuckers) little macho-asses and their Beckham-hair cuts spitting feminism in the face (I’m generalizing a little bit, I know…).. The list could be continued on and on…
With every passing day the feeling increases more and more that we are surrounded by idiocy and callousness more than ever… We could discuss endlessly how or if MTV, daily soaps, daily talks, videogames, lack of breeding and education and so on contribute to the situation. We wouldn’t come to an end…
Even sadder is the fact that times also have changed in this scene I feel appendant to since 15+ years now… What once was kind of an island of respect has now become a playground for self-portrayal… It seems there’s more talk about style than about politics. It’s more about bulk heading and violence than unity. More about shittalking in anonymous internet blogs than face to face confrontation or productive interaction. To me it’s also more and more about hatred towards this scene we (in some way or another) still wanna be and are a part of. I’m about to throw up on cute little monsters on epilleptic-neon-coloured shirts worn by hip stylers and commit REAL acts of violence to violent dancers…come on: were are the people wearing DROPDEAD-shirts and not meaning the shitty fashion-label?? Seems they’re all gone…
People seem to be so apathetic. Values like unity, political awareness, helpfulness or just kindness not seem to exist anymore. They’ve become trite words in our everyday lives and in the scene. But maybe I’m again a little too much of a doomsayer right now…maybe you might feel different about it…
Let me state something clearly here: in my opinion you don’t necessarily need to be the girl or guy in the first row screaming the loudest against whatever the topic is. You don’t necessarily need to be part of the black block to make a change politically. You don’t need to book shows, glue posters or be friends with everybody to contribute to something positive or prove unity and collegiality. Even lesser you need to look, behave or be like everybody else around you. Things start little in the smallest systems whether that means you give someone a smile on the street or at a show, help a granny carrying her bag, treat people fair or whatever. It belongs to you how much you want to participate on a positive change…
Never the less: I don’t want to exempt myself from some of the (negative aspects) above… I feel like nobody can… But for myself I’ve made the decision to try to do my best by resisting the pressures to fit into a certain mould which dictates certain behaviour. Besides all the (justified) hatred I want to keep my ability to love, help others and vouch for someone or something… In times when I’m fed up with shit there are best friends and family to help out. Further more there’s an outlet for rage like BITTERNESS EXHUMED or former bands I’ve been involved in as well as going to shows which also helps me a lot not to go ape shit. It helps me to cope with my anger and I’m very thankful for that… On the other hand I can also share all the positive things that happen in life with those same people and in the same places… So after all, to me it’s all about finding ways to deal with my everyday challenges and not pulling down the scale to hard on one side. Occasional love, occasional misanthropy… I think it’s the mind which needs distance sometimes so that the heart can continue to love…
Find your own ways to strike distance.. .. Seb, summer 2010
