Annie Clark going full hard rock maximalist — it feels like a real swinging-for-the-fences moment in her catalog. She produced it herself for the first time, which you can feel all over it. Total ownership of the vision. The guitars are nasty in the best way. She’s always been technically ferocious but this one she just lets it rip with less polish and more menace.
There’s also this undercurrent of mortality and darkness running through it — heavier thematically than a lot of her work — but she frames it with enough swagger that it never gets oppressive. More like staring down the void and smirking at it. This 2024 release is on clementine orange marble vinyl.
