Vinyl Challenge: A record perfect for a cookout

And I quote from the classic track 'Food':

"Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, spaghetti, rice
French fried potatoes and goulash
Eggs over easy, asparagus spears
Hot dogs and baked beans and sauerkraut

Black-bottomed mushrooms and chicken pot pie
Pink lemonade on the Fourth of July!"

Plus then they go on to sing aloud their pot brownie recipe, which is a welcome addition to any cookout! Other tracks that are sure to get the party started are the self-parody Elenore, the psychedelic treasures of The Last Thing I Remember and You Showed Me, and the crack-up novelty numbers like Buzzsaw and I’m Chief Kamanawanalea (We’re the Royal Macadamia Nuts).

This albums really sets out to do what The Beatles originally envisioned for Sgt Pepper... The Turtles take on the guise of a different band for every track, including The Bigg Brothers (pictured).

Enjoy the brownies!

The mellow arrangements and Nilsson's sweeter-than-honey delivery make this the perfect album to rouse me into consciousness on a hazy summer morning like today. Interesting selection of songs, including a track he wrote on spec for the film Midnight Cowboy in the style of his hit cover of Fred Neil's Everybody's Talkin -- I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City. Schlesinger decided to use the original cover anyway so this became an oddball album track instead.

Plus you get Simon Smith & His Amazing Dancing Bear!

I love Novocaine For The Soul for a number of reasons. First it serves as a fantastic hard reset in sound for Mark Oliver Everett after two albums as 'A Man Called E' and a disowned debut album under his own name. Second it's a fun one to spin on vinyl because it starts with a needle-drop sample from Fats Domino's 'Let The Four Winds Blow', which adds some crackly texture to the album which will be further fleshed out on future records. Third, this track is one of the few Eels tracks that people who aren't diehard fans know and love, so I've been able to use it as an entry-point to turn casual fans on to the deeper riches in their discography.

Amazingly this album turns 30 years old next month, with a BRAND NEW Eels album following in the fall.
